Riad Mellah, a heritage restoration

Heritage restoration of a riad in the Mellah. Traditional zellige, hexagonal clay tiles, stone and gold mosaics, with full respect for the old techniques.

Bathroom: walk-in shower clad in Calacatta marble, wall-hung walnut vanity unit, emerald zellige niche
01 — The case study

The challenge

An 18th-century riad in Marrakech, a listed property, to be converted into a 5-star boutique hotel while preserving its heritage features.

Our approach

An inventory of the features to keep (painted ceilings, fountains), then a materials plan that respects tradition while meeting hotel standards.

The materials

  • Atlas-blue glazed zellige in the patios, laid by a master craftsman from Fez
  • Hexagonal red clay tiles for the floors of the shared areas
  • Stone and brass mosaic in the wellness areas
  • Calacatta marble for the new bathrooms, as a contemporary touch

The handover

8 months on site, coordinated with the heritage trades. The hotel opened in September 2025.
